Happy Thanksgiving

This week we have been learning lots about being kind to others and being thankful for all the things in our lives which make us happy. We have been busy making cards, baking for our thanksgiving snack, and sharing with others what we are thankful for. On Friday one of our families from America came in to tell us all about their Thanksgiving traditions.

P1 Update

By Finn & Zara

We had a wonderful time celebrating Diwali with the help of Sonia’s Mum. She was kind enough to visit our class for the afternoon and explain why Diwali is important in the Hindu calendar. She told us the story of Rama and Sita and lit candles to help us understand why it is called the Festival of Lights.

This week we moved our whole classroom into the gym hall – tables, chairs, cupboards and all. This is because our classroom is having a huge makeover and we can’t wait to see what it looks like when it is finished! We have settled nicely into the hall and we are enjoying having lots of extra space to move around.

P7B Update

Last week P7 went to the Poppy Factory. In the first room, there was a pretend solider from World War 2 and he was very loud. It was really fun and interesting to see all of the different artefacts to help us learn about our history. We also made lots of poppies.

This week P7 went to Craigmount High School for a maths transition event. We went with the other schools in our cluster: East Craigs, Corstorphine, Hillwood and Fox Covert. P7 enjoyed doing this activity and it made them less worried about high school. We were lucky enough to have the S2s to help us. Thank you to the staff at  Craigmount for organising a brilliant transition event.

P7P Update

Recently in P7P we have been learning about the history of the poppy and WW2. To do this we visited the Poppy Factory where we talked about rationing, fighting and even got to make some poppies and take them home. We each placed a poppy into a Roseburn wreath, which our Pupil Council representatives laid at the War Memorial, within the grounds of Murrayfield Stadium, before the Scotland v Fiji match.

We also did a maths event at Craigmount High School where we won some prizes. This was one of many transition events we will attend throughout the year to help us become familiar with our high school.

P3/4 Update

We have been learning to tell the time – o’ clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to.

We have been learning about poetry using Talk for Writing strategies and through the poem ‘The Magic Box’, written by Kit Wright. The poem has very imaginative items that it puts inside the box. Next week we shall be changing the poem to include some of our own imaginative items.

We got a letter from Tutankhamen and we have been studying Egyptians ever since. Now we know hieroglyphics. This is Egyptian writing and it it is like a symbol or picture. Yesterday we drew an Egyptian on sandpaper.

P5M Update

After our last update, Ms Marnitz left Roseburn. We were very sad to see her go and we gave her a great send off by singing and cheering on the stairs. We are now enjoying getting to know Ms Turek.

This week we have been learning about money and decimal points.

We are also learning about rainforests. Did you know that rainforests are on their way to becoming extcint?!

In P5F, we created a PowerPoint about Mary Queen of Scots. Using Book Creator,  we recorded facts about Mary Queen of Scots. Here are some of our favourite facts:

  • She killed 300 people.
  • Her full name is Mary Stuart.

In art, we did portraits of Mary Queen of Scots and Rizzo.

P6 Update

In P6, in the last two weeks, we have been looking at different written strategies in maths, such as chimney sums. We have also been lucky enough to welcome university students into our class to help with some tricky maths concepts. This week we explored square numbers.

Last Monday we visited Edinburgh Zoo and we learnt how to identify male and female animals by their body parts and colouring. We have been learning about puberty and the changes to the body that may occur for males and females throughout puberty.

In reading, we have been reading a description of something or someone and we then had to visualise it and then draw it.
