Information about Primary 1 at Roseburn Primary

We are looking forward to welcoming all new P1 pupils to Roseburn Primary School in session 2026/ 27.

Please have a look at the following information and documents for about Transition from Nursery to Primary One.

Transition

The Transition Project

The book that is the focus for the transition project this year is “The Everywhere Bear” by Julia Donaldson. Please look out for information by email, and on the school website for details of activities related to the project. The Everywhere Bear transition project is designed to support children moving from nursery to Primary 1 in Edinburgh schools. It helps ease the transition by creating shared experiences across different early years settings, ensuring that all children engage with the same story and activities before starting school.

How it Works:

📖 Story-Based Learning: Each P1 class has its own ‘Everywhere Bear’, a class bear that helps children explore their new school environment and build connections. 🎭 Creative Play & Exploration: Activities encourage storytelling, imaginative play, and discussions about feelings, friendships, and change. 🌍 Community & Familiarity: By engaging with the same book and themes, children feel a sense of shared experience when they start school, making the transition smoother.

A Welcome Pack will be available at the Welcome Meeting with information about school and P1 classes. We will share additional information by email.

To support P1 Transition we are creating a FAQ re starting school inp1 at Roseburn. Please use the form link if you have any questions. https://forms.office.com/r/3u0zScDXVg

Primary 1 Registration for August 2025

If you live in the City of Edinburgh Council area you must register your child for P1 when registration opens in November 2024.

If your child’s date of birth is between 1 March 2020 and 28 February 2021 they are due to start primary school in August 2025.

If you live outside the catchment area of your preferred school you need to make a placing request. You will only receive a place if one is available.

Parents/Carers will receive a P1 Enrolment letter from Edinburgh Council telling them which schools are their catchment schools, based on the address we have on our systems for you. The letter will inform you what your catchment ND (non-denominational) school is and your catchment RC (Roman Catholic) school.

In Edinburgh, all Early Years settings and primary schools are working together on a joint literacy project organised by The City of Edinburgh Council Early Years Team. This means that no matter what nursery they are enrolled in, or what primary school they move into, all children will be familiar with the same story and will have a shared experience.

Primary Schools Open Day – Wednesday 30th October 2024

All Edinburgh Primary Schools are open on Wednesday 30 October 24.

You are encouraged to visit your child’s catchment school on this date.

Roseburn Primary School will be hosting tours of the school by our House Captains, supported by the HT Mrs Borrowman at 9.30am and 1.30pm on this date.

There is no need to book, please just make your way to the school office at these times.

Deferrals

  • For information about deferrals and the process please go to: https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/nurseries-childcare/defer-entry-p1/1
  • ELC will support parents and carers in coming to an informed decision about deferring entry to primary school. They will meet with you to discuss any concerns and can arrange visits to your catchment school so you can find out about the experiences P1 would offer your child. You can then speak with the school about how you can work together to support your child in making this important transition.
  • When you apply to defer entry to P1, you are agreeing that you don’t need a place in P1 until August 2026. When your application is approved, your child’s P1 place is withdrawn.
