P5F Update

On Monday 19th November, we went on a Wildlife Ranger trip to a clearing along the Water of Leith. While we were there, we created leaf art in our ‘table’ groups.

We got the chance to play tig in the space. Then finally, we built a mouse house using the natural materials we could find and we put oatmeal inside to tempt the mice in.

We went back in time to Ancient Egypt…when all of a sudden there was a flash flood that left behind this black stuff!

The black stuff grew crops, like wheat and grapes and other things. Then we harvested our crops and the floods started again. There are only 3 seasons in Ancient Egypt: the flash flood, the growing season and the harvesting season.

We went swimming for the first time at James Gillespie’s High School and we have been put into our different groups ready for next week. In the pool, we blew bubbles and swam on our front and back.

For the Christmas Fair we are all in different groups learning about advertising, purchasing and spreadsheets. We are excited about the Christmas Fair next week but I am not sure whether we will be ready. We have planned a lot of time to do the rest of our work and we think it will be very fun and popular.

On Tuesday we are going to the Lyceum to see Peter Pan and on Wednesday we will have a visitor to teach us about advertising. He advertises himself and we think it will be interesting to learn from an expert.

We have been learning about money as part of Financial Education Week. In money, we have been learning about the disadvantages and advantages of credit and debit. We looked at ATM machines and learned how to take money out of them through using games. We went on a trip to the Museum on the Mound and took part in some activities. We made coins and saw all the steps involved in making a note. There were lots of old coins and we discovered that, in the olden days, animal fur would have been used as money.

Happy Thanksgiving

This week we have been learning lots about being kind to others and being thankful for all the things in our lives which make us happy. We have been busy making cards, baking for our thanksgiving snack, and sharing with others what we are thankful for. On Friday one of our families from America came in to tell us all about their Thanksgiving traditions.

We had a wonderful time celebrating Diwali with the help of Sonia’s Mum. She was kind enough to visit our class for the afternoon and explain why Diwali is important in the Hindu calendar. She told us the story of Rama and Sita and lit candles to help us understand why it is called the Festival of Lights.

This week we moved our whole classroom into the gym hall – tables, chairs, cupboards and all. This is because our classroom is having a huge makeover and we can’t wait to see what it looks like when it is finished! We have settled nicely into the hall and we are enjoying having lots of extra space to move around.

Last week P7 went to the Poppy Factory. In the first room, there was a pretend solider from World War 2 and he was very loud. It was really fun and interesting to see all of the different artefacts to help us learn about our history. We also made lots of poppies.

This week P7 went to Craigmount High School for a maths transition event. We went with the other schools in our cluster: East Craigs, Corstorphine, Hillwood and Fox Covert. P7 enjoyed doing this activity and it made them less worried about high school. We were lucky enough to have the S2s to help us. Thank you to the staff at  Craigmount for organising a brilliant transition event.

Recently in P7P we have been learning about the history of the poppy and WW2. To do this we visited the Poppy Factory where we talked about rationing, fighting and even got to make some poppies and take them home. We each placed a poppy into a Roseburn wreath, which our Pupil Council representatives laid at the War Memorial, within the grounds of Murrayfield Stadium, before the Scotland v Fiji match.

We also did a maths event at Craigmount High School where we won some prizes. This was one of many transition events we will attend throughout the year to help us become familiar with our high school.

P3/4 Update

We have been learning to tell the time – o’ clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to.

We have been learning about poetry using Talk for Writing strategies and through the poem ‘The Magic Box’, written by Kit Wright. The poem has very imaginative items that it puts inside the box. Next week we shall be changing the poem to include some of our own imaginative items.

We got a letter from Tutankhamen and we have been studying Egyptians ever since. Now we know hieroglyphics. This is Egyptian writing and it it is like a symbol or picture. Yesterday we drew an Egyptian on sandpaper.
