Welcome to P5F

Welcome to P5F.  We are looking forward to a year of fun and learning.

Our class library day will be Tuesdays.  Once the library computer has been updated your child will be able to borrow up to 2 books at a time.

PE days will be Wednesday and Thursday. Please make sure your child has a gym kit (shorts, t-shirt and gym shoes) on these days.

Our home learning will start on Monday 10 September.  A home learning grid will be issued and the children will have a range of activities to choose from. They will have 4 weeks to complete the activities and each child will have a chance to share their home learning with the class.

Our topics for this term will be Friendships and Incredible bodies.  You can find more information about the learning outcomes in our curriculum leaflet which will be sent out in the next couple of weeks.

There a quite a few runny noses at the moment so any donations of tissues would be gratefully received.

P4F Class update – June

Home Learning – There will be no further home learning grids for this term. Spelling will continue as normal until the end of next week (22nd June)

Workshop – Both P4 classes have been offered a free workshop from Heriot Watt University. The workshop is called Women in engineering and will take place on Wednesday 20th June. The workshops will include activities such as fluids and rocks ; students will get familiarised with the concepts of porosity (pore space within porous material) and permeability (ability of porous material to allow fluid to pass through it) as well as with the concepts of capillary action (ability of a fluid to flow along the pores against an opposing force such as gravity).  Also a building challenge: pupils will compete within their class to build the highest tower able to support chocolate coins/the strongest bridge. After the building phase during which pupils have the chance to interact with engineers and get help all structures will be tested to destruction.

Topic – We are learning about climates. We have been watching a Planet Earth DVD about deserts. We had to take notes while watching the film, and then had to write our own factual report about desert climates. When these are completed, we are going to share our learning with P4M and they will share what they have learned about the rainforest climate

Maths – In our money work we have been doing party planning and wedding planning. We had to work out how much it would cost, how to stay within a budget and practice our adding/multiplying skills to work out the answers.

Health Week – We really enjoyed some of the activities for health week. We walked a mile nearly every day, we did a drumming workshop, we had a sing-a-long in the hall, we took part in an “Emotion Works” workshop, had a session with Lachlan from Murrayfield Wanderers rugby and we did wake up/shake up.

Garden Clear-up

The nursery children, parents and staff have been busy in the garden this week. They have helped by digging, sweeping, shovelling, weeding and trimming. All the leaves and debris left from the winter have been cleared and our garden is looking much tidier and ready for play!

We want to say another HUGE thank you to those who have helped to bring our garden back to life! We couldn’t have done it without your help!

Ethan’s work was created with black felt pen and a wash of water. He has been invited to attend a  prizegiving ceremony at the Modern Art Gallery next month, where his work will be exhibited from May 28-Sept 15.

Congratulations Ethan – there were over 8000 entries so this is an amazing achievement!

All about babies

We have been lucky to have two tiny visitors in the nursery this week! We have been joined by two of our families to help us learn about how to look after a baby. The children were all full of questions for our baby visitors and we all learned lots thanks to the knowledge shared by their siblings (and parents). To thank our visitors for coming in we sang them their favourite nursery rhymes.
