In nursery we have been busy planting seeds. The children have done an excellent job at looking after their seeds to help them grow! Our cress has already sprouted and we can’t wait until the shoots of our sunflowers start to appear!
February update
We are currently busily working on our Europe topic. The class have split into groups and each group is learning as much as they can about a country in Europe. They are creating posters, iMovies and presentations about their country in preparation for parents coming to school in March. Parents will be invited to our travel agency to browse possible holiday destinations and choose which they feel would be best for them based on food, activities and weather. The date for this will be given soon.
P4 F March update
We have been learning how to code in our Topic work. We have been using Tynker on the Ipads and we had to tell the dragon what to do. We gave the dragon instructions and we tried it to see if it would work with correctly. We have been learning about bugs (this is when something goes wrong, or our instructions are not correct). We have also been learning about loops which is when an instruction repeats itself.
Today we visited the Apple Store in Princes Street. We learned about which is a ball-shaped robot that you can program to move about. You can change the colour of the light inside, fade the light, and put different light effect on it. We also worked in partners. One of us was the coder and the other was the robot. We had to give instructions to our partner to get them to the finish point. We learned about an Ipad app called Swift Playground. We had to use our coding skills to move the character around the maze. This is a free app that can be downloaded to help children with their coding.
In our Maths work we have been learning about chance and uncertainty. We have been playing a lot of probability games. We are getting really good at predicting things that match a word (Impossible, Possible, Sometimes, Not very likely etc). We have also been working on our times tables and we are trying to improve the speed of our tables.
P4M Update
P4M have had a very busy time over the last few weeks! Mr Green joined us as a teaching student from the University of Edinburgh and worked with us on a number of topics. The class particularly enjoyed the science experiments he delivered on dissolving and water filters. We will be saying farewell to him this week on Friday 9th March.
We have started to learn how to code as our latest class project, and have had a Field Trip to the Apple Store on Princes Street. The class learned how to code using the coding language Swift and the iPad app called Swift Playgrounds. This is a free app so if you have an iPad at home you could download it and give it a go! The class also learned how to code Sphero robots using block based programming. We will be following this up in class with some work using an app called Tynker and a visit to Craigmount High School to work with Microbits.
Don’t forget this term we have parent consultations so we are looking forward to seeing you all then! Miss Millar will be taking care of the Wednesday evening consultations and Mrs Martin will be taking the Friday appointments.
Learning Focus: Spring and Weather
Wonderful Weather
The Nursery girls and boys have enjoyed playing in the ever changing weather we have experienced in the last week.
They flew around in the wind, enjoyed a forest walk and picnic in the spring sunshine, and wrapped up to play in an unexpected blizzard. They really enjoyed trying to catch the snowflakes on their tongues! We can’t wait to hear all about what you have learned about weather during the snow days!
Creating Castles
To help us learn about castles and life in the past, the children have transformed the nursery into a giant castle! They have been busy using the big blocks inside and outside to design their own elaborate castles, constructing swords, shields and other equipment to help them protect their castle and dressing up as their favourite story knights, princes and princesses.
P6M go to outer space

Generation Science ‘Space Base’ workshop visited P6M at Roseburn Primary School on Wednesday. As part of the Edinburgh Science Festival, they turned our school hall into outer space. Their team of scientists set up a planetarium and primary 6 were taken on a whistle stop tour of our galaxy. We got an up-close look at planets, stars, moons and constellations. The scientists told us about different galaxies and types of planets – P6 even impressed the scientists with some of their knowledge.
Our space topic will blast off next term, but this term we are busy learning about some places closer to home. P6M are working on their Europe topic, researching different European countries to find out about their languages, cultures, traditions, food and more.
We are learning about money in our maths topic. We are learning about change, paying by card, finance, banking, and other currencies. We’re looking forward to our upcoming trip to The Museum on the Mound, to find out more about what money is, counterfeit money and how banks work.
Art Competition Winner!
Lucy, p6R, was delighted to hear that her mixed-media collage had won 2nd prize in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children’s art competition, ‘Through the Window’. She attended a prizegiving at the hospital where her work, ‘Purple Sunlight’, was framed and on display.
“I got a lot of inspiration from the paintings that were there… I was impressed by the other pictures. One was completed by a blind boy and it was my favourite! We had the chance to speak to the other artists and give each other art tips!” Lucy
