Winter Wonderland

The children in the Nursery were thrilled when the snow appeared this week. We have had fabulous fun exploring what we can do and make in the snow!

We have enjoyed sledding, snowball fights, making snow angels, mark-making and making footprint paths, painting with ice, as well as building ice castles and snowmen!

Roseburn’s Dancing Penguins

FAEBE341-BCB2-48AE-82CB-E0FCAAF23760As part of Enterprise Week, our class, along with P2/3, decided to update the Christmas song  ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’. We talked about the different roles required to write and release a song, as well as the difficulty with copywrite. Luckily, this song could not be traced and so we were free to do our own cover!

After brainstorming lots of ideas for our band’s name, we voted for Roseburn’s Dancing Penguins! Once we knew who we were as a band, we signed up for one of the production groups with some lyricists, musicians and advertisers. Within each role, we identified our goals and got to work!

In our different roles we managed to write 4 new verses, learned to play the tune on many different instruments and each of us got to design our own album artwork with Mrs Denvir. We also created a heart-warming advert with Mrs Clarke, along with many penguin posters to try to sell our song. While we were at the museum, we even got some free advertising by performing our song to the staff and visitors.

After lots of practice, it was time for recording. We were very lucky to have sound designers come in to school to work with us and record our beautiful singing and playing to then make the track.

Once the song was finished editing, it was time for the final step, production. After our teachers uploaded the song online, we got the album artwork ready and made some Christmas merchandise. We were finally ready to sell our single at the Christmas Fair!

We had so much fun learning what was involved in creating and releasing a single! It was a big job, but we managed it through working together, successfully making over £100 profit for the school!

Thank you again to everyone who was involved! What a great enterprise it was!

P4F – January update

P4F January update

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

Thank you very much to everyone who came along to our Christmas service. We hope you enjoyed it.

This term our topic is water. We will be learning about the water cycle, ocean pollution and the different properties of water.

We have a student helping in the class this term from Edinburgh College. Her name is Heather Ramsay and she will be in school on Mondays and Fridays.

We have now finished our block of swimming lessons. Thank you so much to all the parents who helped with these trips. The children will be receiving their swimming certificates in due course.

Our new block of home learning is now on the website. This block runs from today until 9th February.

Christmas Characters on the Tram!

Congratulations to Eoin and Mark from P4, whose winning watercolours are currently featured on the ‘Edinburgh’s Christmas ’ tram!

The boys and their families attended a prizegiving ceremony at the airport and were presented goodie bags from Edinburgh Trams and Edinburgh’s Christmas, which included a trip on the Christmas tram and tickets for Edinburgh’s  Ice Adventure! Mark and Eoin were thrilled to see their work on the tram and even spotted Mark’s skating penguin at the Christmas market too!

People Around the World

Over the past few weeks we have been learning about the people, places and cultures which are part of our nursery community and the world.

We have been lucky to have such enthusiastic volunteers who came in and shared some of their language, stories, food, songs, Christmas traditions, and photos from their home country. We have learned lots about places such as London, Sweden, Romania, Prague, China and even the island of Saint Vincent. We are gaining a greater appreciation for how we are all unique.

Fabulous Farm Fun

To link together our animal classification and community topics, Primary 2 visited Gorgie City Farm. We looked at the different animals to decide if they were mammals, birds or reptiles. We also thought about the different activities we can do in the local community.

Here are our some of our highlights:

I liked the lambs because they were climbing up on the wall and because one of the lambs was trying to get the milk from the mummy (Charlize).

My favourite was the lambs because they were cute (Laila).

I liked the pigs as my favourite because they were so cute (Finn).

My favourite part was the park because it was fun and we got to play (Aoife).

The park with the spinny thing was the best because it spins you (Aroon).

I liked the park because there was a big slide and it was really fun (Isla K).

We liked the playpark because it was fun because I kept going into the little hut to because it was my base (Harrison).

My favourite animals were the chickens because they were clucky  and funny (Xander).

I liked the cows (Thomas).

I liked the goats because I liked their horns (Halden).

‘Through the Window’

Congratulations to Lucy B. from p6B who has won 2nd prize in an art competition run by the Royal Hospital for Sick Children. The competition, ‘Through the Window, invited pupils to create work to be displayed in the new hospital which opens in 2018.
