Magnificent Mark-making

We have been busy in the nursery this week. The children have enjoyed experimenting with a variety of materials to create writing and drawings inside and outside in the garden.

Some of the highlights include: inventing a mega car with a transformer button which changes it into anything it needs to be, helping to tick who is here on the register, practising to write our names, writing our own stories, drawing ourselves, family and pets and of course working hard to create our winter artwork to sell at the Christmas fair in a few weeks time!

Refugee workshop P4F

Today (Monday 20 November) we had a visit from 2 ladies from ONE.

ONE is an organisation that works with refugees in Scotland. They help them find accommodation and to settle in when they arrive.

In our workshop we had to answer some questions about refugees such as how many refugees are there in the world and what is a refugee.

Here are some facts we found out:

  • Lots of refugees arrive in Scotland with only the clothes they are wearing (Lara)
  • Refugees are people who had to leave their own country because they were forced to leave or didn’t feel safe (Dominic)
  • Some refugees had to leave family members behind because they were not well enough to make the journey (Isabella)
  • Some of the refugees have been using cartoons to help them learn English (Imogen)
  • There are approximately 65 million refugees in the world (Caleb)
  • Some refugees live in tents (Dakota)
  • Lots of refugees have had to leave all possessions behind and don’t have much money (Mairi)
  • Some refugees try to get to safety on boats, but they are often overcrowded. (Sahana)
  • The owners of the boats charge the refugees to travel and try to get as many people on the boat as possible (Alfie)

French Links

I hope that you are all as impressed as we are with the amount of French that P1 are learning; I thought it would be nice to share some songs that the children can practice with. As always, encourage the children to do their best, and not be afraid to try the French accent.

First, the classique Frere Jacques.

We haven’t sung this song in class, but it is a nice way to practice “How do you call yourself?” and “How is it going?”

For learning the numbers,

Finally, this song about days of the week is a terrible earworm…

The Tropical Rainforest

imagePrimary 5 are now learning about the Tropical Rainforest whilst also learning about note-taking and rewriting texts in their own words.  They are particularly interested in learning about the layers of the rainforest, the vegetation, animals, the climate and location of rainforests.  They  have been watching videos, reading books and researching on the internet to widen their knowledge and understanding and have also created some wonderful art. There has also been some really impressive writing generated by their interest.

P5’s Holyrood Palace Trip

Primary 5 had a wonderful visit to Holyrood Palace as a culmination of our learning about Mary Queen of Scots and impressed the guide with their knowledge and enthusiasm about the subject. They got to tour apartments where Mary Queen of Scots lived, saw historical artefacts that belonged to her and tried on clothes from her era.  They particularly enjoyed seeing the murder scene and examined the blood stain where David Rizzio was brutally killed, the gallery with paintings showing all the previous kings of Scotland and Mary Queen of Scots, the secret door as well as evidence of battles  damaging the woodwork  in this room and all the challenges set to find artefacts showing the way of life in historical times.

‘Edinburgh’s Christmas’ Winners!

Eoin                                                    Mark

We are thrilled to announce that we have not one, but TWO winners in the ‘Edinburgh’s Christmas’ tram competition. Pupils were asked to design characters to appear on the side of a tram which will travel into Edinburgh every day over the festive period.

Many congratulations to Eoin and Mark in p4M whose work has been selected! What a great honour to have your work displayed to such a huge international audience!

The pupils and their families will be invited to an award ceremony – more details to follow soon!

P4M Update

Welcome to the second term!

We hope you got a copy of our curriculum leaflet.

The children have started to look at poems this term and managed to add two new verses to a poem. They have also started our Time project and have made a calendar which has all out important dates that we need to know about. They have also added any activities they do, birthdays and, of course, the holidays! We will be working on analogue and digital time, and different ways that time can be measured.

We had a visit from the Royal Scottish National Orchetra. They came in with a double bass which the children could feel the vibrations through the floor. They then had to make up a piece of music representing a hero and a villain. This is the theme of the performance that we are going to see on the 27 November.

We are also looking forward to a visit from the charity called ONE. They will be telling us about refugees in Scotland.

The class are really enjoying their swimming lessons and are learning how to stop water going up their noses by humming! They are also learning to float on their backs and tread water.

We will have a busy term with Christmas performance, Christmas Fair and singing at places within our local community. The children have already started to plan the event and think of songs.

If you have any questions then please get in touch.
