Monday 30 March – P3

Good morning everyone. I hope you had a lovely weekend.

Have a look at the “things to work on at home” post on the website.  It will give you an idea of some activities and task you could try at home this week.

The spelling sound for this week is “ea”.  Watch out for Miss Fraser’s spelling challenge which will be coming tomorrow!ea spelling

And if you want to find out what the 6 ingredients of my tray bake were then check out my recipe on the website  🙂

Support for Reading

During school closures, we want to make sure that every child has access to daily reading, which is why we are announcing access to over 6,000 digital books with myON, as well as myON News, which provides daily news articles reviewed by child psychologists, helping to ensure students make sense of current events.   myON links with both Star Reading and Accelerated Reader quizzes and offers practical literacy tools and supports through myON Projects.    Now freely available for students to use!

P6 Home Learning

Hoping everyone is managing to stay well and enjoying spending more time with their families. Would love to see more work shared on Twitter or messages supporting each other through this difficult time. It is very hard planning your work when I am unsure how you are managing or if you need support with something please do let us know by sending messages to admin@roseburn.edin.sch.uk. I am attaching the answers for the fraction work and a plan for Week 2 activities. Hope this helps. Best wishes everyone…. Miss Gardner

Friday 27th March

Good morning P4/5!  Last week we spent some of our maths lessons practising our times stables, and applying these to help multiply 2 and 3 digit numbers together using written and mental strategies.

We have looked at ways for learning your tables quickly (for example, using the 2x table to work out the 4x and 8x tables).  Can you remember what these rules and patterns are, and could you explain them to someone at home?

The website timestables.co.uk is a great resource for practising your times tables.  Use it to help learn tables you still find a bit tricky, and work on being able to recall multiplication facts with speed and accuracy.

If you feel confident with all your tables, then you can practice multiplying larger numbers using the questions below:

You can also use the Math Aids website to set your own questions for extra practice.

Remember you can share your work with the school twitter… @roseburnPS

Have a great day!

Phonics and Handwriting

As part of learning to read and spell, it is important learn our sounds. They give us the necessary building blocks for everything else. It can be a bit daunting at first, so P1 have put together a handy guide to the first 26 initial sounds.

Some sounds are stretchy. This means you can keep making the sound for a long time – like ‘s’.

Some sounds are bouncy. We say them quickly, over and over, so we can hear the pure sound they make – like ‘b’.

The book also gives you some guidance on how we form our cursive letters.

In Edinburgh, we follow a phonics scheme called Literacy Rich. We supplement this learning with lots of other resources to try to make learning sounds as fun, engaging and memorable as possible! One of our favourites is to watch Geraldine the Giraffe on Youtube (search for Mr Thorne does Phonics).

Friday 27th March

Good morning and a very happy Friday to you all. Only half a day to go and you will have officially completed your first week of P4 from home! Give yourself and your new teacher a big pat on the back!

I hope this week has been a success and you have earned some Golden Time today! I have bought a new game called, ‘Okay Play’ and it’s very similar to Connect 4. Hopefully my extra training during self-isolation will ensure I am still Primary 4 Connect 4 Champion on our return to school!

Anyway, best do some learning before Golden Time. Here is some maths and literacy learning to keep those brains working today!

Maths

Yesterday, you worked on adding different amounts of money together. Hopefully you managed to work out how much my essentials would cost! Today, we will work on calculating change. This is such an important life skill and one you can use to check you have been given the correct change in a shop!

We use number lines to calculate the change and we jump from how much we have spent to how much we have paid with. I have attached a picture of this strategy as it’s a little too tricky for me to type an explanation. Some children may be able to calculate the change using only two jumps instead of three! Some children may wish to do more than three jumps!

I have attached an activity to practise calculating change. Choose either change from £1 and £2 or the £5 and £10 sheet – I wouldn’t expect the children to do both! Again, there is no pressure to print these out to complete them – working in your jotter or whiteboard is absolutely fine!

Literacy

I hope you enjoyed writing and sharing your play scripts yesterday! I wonder if anyone performed their play to their family or maybe some of you put on a puppet show?

We are going to finish this week with a reading activity. You should be reading for fun every day and enjoying books, comics, fact files etc! Reading is very beneficial for your learning but it’s also a relaxing activity that you can do independently!

Use the question fans in your home learning packs to create 3 questions about a text you have read recently. If someone can help, discuss your answers with them. If everyone is a little busy, try writing the answers to each question down. Remember to answer in sentences and give a reason if it’s appropriate!

I’d imagine your weekend may be a little different to usual – I know mine will be. Some of you may even get to enjoy a long lie for the first time in a while! Enjoy spending time with your family and here’s hoping we get some sunshine to enjoy during our daily exercise! Stay safe and I’ll be in touch on Monday.

Friday 27 March – P3

Good morning P3!

I did some baking yesterday.  My recipe has only 6 ingredients….can you work out what they are?? (I have posted a picture below so you can use that for some clues).  If someone guesses all 6 correctly I will post the recipe for you to try and home.  Good luck!

We were supposed to be sharing our learning about inventors with the parents this week.  Why not try presenting your talk to your family at home?  Don’t forget to make notes to help you remember key things.

Have a good weekend!

Miss Fraser 🙂

Thursday 26th March – ERIC

Each week, P4/5 and P5 complete an ERIC task.  ERIC stands for Explanation, Retrieval, Interpretation and Choice and is a task that is designed to develop comprehension and understanding through 4 key questions.  The questions could be based on several different types of source, for example a poem/short story, picture or a video.

This week we have uploaded a picture task.  In your literacy jotters, answer the 4 questions and remember to provide evidence and reasoning to support your answer.  P4/5 have, in particular, been practising how to answer these questions using full sentences.

If you complete this task and would like a challenge, try to find a different source (again, a video, picture, poem or short story) and create your own 4 ERIC questions for someone to answer at home!
