Phonics and Handwriting

As part of learning to read and spell, it is important learn our sounds. They give us the necessary building blocks for everything else. It can be a bit daunting at first, so P1 have put together a handy guide to the first 26 initial sounds.

Some sounds are stretchy. This means you can keep making the sound for a long time – like ‘s’.

Some sounds are bouncy. We say them quickly, over and over, so we can hear the pure sound they make – like ‘b’.

The book also gives you some guidance on how we form our cursive letters.

In Edinburgh, we follow a phonics scheme called Literacy Rich. We supplement this learning with lots of other resources to try to make learning sounds as fun, engaging and memorable as possible! One of our favourites is to watch Geraldine the Giraffe on Youtube (search for Mr Thorne does Phonics).

Friday 27th March

Good morning and a very happy Friday to you all. Only half a day to go and you will have officially completed your first week of P4 from home! Give yourself and your new teacher a big pat on the back!

I hope this week has been a success and you have earned some Golden Time today! I have bought a new game called, ‘Okay Play’ and it’s very similar to Connect 4. Hopefully my extra training during self-isolation will ensure I am still Primary 4 Connect 4 Champion on our return to school!

Anyway, best do some learning before Golden Time. Here is some maths and literacy learning to keep those brains working today!

Maths

Yesterday, you worked on adding different amounts of money together. Hopefully you managed to work out how much my essentials would cost! Today, we will work on calculating change. This is such an important life skill and one you can use to check you have been given the correct change in a shop!

We use number lines to calculate the change and we jump from how much we have spent to how much we have paid with. I have attached a picture of this strategy as it’s a little too tricky for me to type an explanation. Some children may be able to calculate the change using only two jumps instead of three! Some children may wish to do more than three jumps!

I have attached an activity to practise calculating change. Choose either change from £1 and £2 or the £5 and £10 sheet – I wouldn’t expect the children to do both! Again, there is no pressure to print these out to complete them – working in your jotter or whiteboard is absolutely fine!

Literacy

I hope you enjoyed writing and sharing your play scripts yesterday! I wonder if anyone performed their play to their family or maybe some of you put on a puppet show?

We are going to finish this week with a reading activity. You should be reading for fun every day and enjoying books, comics, fact files etc! Reading is very beneficial for your learning but it’s also a relaxing activity that you can do independently!

Use the question fans in your home learning packs to create 3 questions about a text you have read recently. If someone can help, discuss your answers with them. If everyone is a little busy, try writing the answers to each question down. Remember to answer in sentences and give a reason if it’s appropriate!

I’d imagine your weekend may be a little different to usual – I know mine will be. Some of you may even get to enjoy a long lie for the first time in a while! Enjoy spending time with your family and here’s hoping we get some sunshine to enjoy during our daily exercise! Stay safe and I’ll be in touch on Monday.

Friday 27 March – P3

Good morning P3!

I did some baking yesterday.  My recipe has only 6 ingredients….can you work out what they are?? (I have posted a picture below so you can use that for some clues).  If someone guesses all 6 correctly I will post the recipe for you to try and home.  Good luck!

We were supposed to be sharing our learning about inventors with the parents this week.  Why not try presenting your talk to your family at home?  Don’t forget to make notes to help you remember key things.

Have a good weekend!

Miss Fraser 🙂

Thursday 26th March – ERIC

Each week, P4/5 and P5 complete an ERIC task.  ERIC stands for Explanation, Retrieval, Interpretation and Choice and is a task that is designed to develop comprehension and understanding through 4 key questions.  The questions could be based on several different types of source, for example a poem/short story, picture or a video.

This week we have uploaded a picture task.  In your literacy jotters, answer the 4 questions and remember to provide evidence and reasoning to support your answer.  P4/5 have, in particular, been practising how to answer these questions using full sentences.

If you complete this task and would like a challenge, try to find a different source (again, a video, picture, poem or short story) and create your own 4 ERIC questions for someone to answer at home!

Thursday 26 March – P3

Good morning P3!   Did I manage to trick you with my fruit pastilles spelling challenge yesterday?  I certainly managed to trick Ms Gardner….she forgot to look for clues on the P3 spelling word list.

If you want to see if you got it right then here is a photo of the words I chose:IMG_4267

Thursday 26th March

Good morning everyone!

I hope that your learning packs and website updates are helping you to continue your learning at home. Most importantly though, I hope you are all well and are making time to relax, have fun and help out around the house!

Here is some intended learning for today and some tasks to support your learning.

Numeracy

You must all now be amazing at adding numbers after all the practice this week! Today, let’s practise adding different amounts of money. We learned this skill before Christmas! You may remember us adding together how much Molly, Walton and Spider Lady’s Christmas presents would cost me!

Here is an example:

£1.46 + £3.73

  1. Firstly, let’s add the pounds together: £1 + £3 = £4
  2. Now, let’s add the pence together: 46p + 73p = 119p
  3. We then need to change 119p into pounds and pence. To do this, we need to remember that there are 100p in £1 so 119p = £1.19
  4. Now add together £4 and £1.19 = £5.19

If this is too tricky, begin by just adding pennies together and using a number line to help you. For example, 36p + 43p. If you’re up for a challenge, why not add larger amounts of money together or add more than two amounts together?

I’ve attached some items I would quite like to buy at the shops just now! Try adding two of the costs together.

Literacy

Yesterday, I suggested planning a scene for a play script. Today’s task is to write the scene! We have been working on play scripts in class and we agreed on the things a play script needs to be successful.

These included:

          A description of the setting

A narrator to set the scene for the audience

Speaker’s name on the left and a colon after their name

Take a new line for each speaker

          Stage directions are in brackets

I have attached the model text, a scene from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, to help you.

P1 Art and Design

In Art and Design we are learning to draw figures with lots of detail and to add a background to show where we are.

Can you draw yourself learning at home?
What are you wearing? Show the details on your clothes – pockets, zips, patterns.
What are you doing? Reading, writing, building, cooking? Add the things you are using!
Where are you? The kitchen, your bedroom, the garden? Include some detail to show this!

You can create your drawing in pencil or felt pen. Add colour if you wish using pencils, pens, pastels or paints!

P2/3 Spelling Stations

Hello p2/3!

We always have lots of fun when we are learning at our spelling stations!

I have uploaded a document for you to show your parents what we do at every station. Have a go at sentence construction, alien station, cube station, creative patterns and spelling detectives at home!

I would love to see how you get on!

Happy Spelling!

Miss Arnot

Wednesday 25th March

Good morning P4,

Another day, another couple of learning activities to keep those P4 brains working!

Numeracy

So far this week, you have been adding up to 3 digit numbers and then using your adding skills to find the missing number.

Today, let’s use those addition skills to solve some maths problems. Try the ‘Wednesday Workout’ in your maths problem solving booklets. This booklet is in your home learning packs.

I have also attached an addition pyramids worksheet at the bottom of this post. There are three different levels of difficulty and the answers are attached too (no peeking!).

The two numbers below a box add to make the number above. You do not need to print this worksheet to complete it! You can simply work out the answers and write these answers in your jotter or on your whiteboard!

Literacy

Wednesday is writing day! Today, let’s focus on planning a piece of writing – a scene from a play script. Decide where the scene will be set, which characters you will include and decide what will happen in the scene. Maybe you could use a mind map to plan your piece of writing?

Remember, it is okay to borrow an idea from one of your favourite books or films! Tomorrow I’ll upload a model text to help you to write your play script.

Remember – be kind to yourself and make time to do lots of fun things too! Play a game, draw a picture and get some fresh air! Addition pyramids

Take care,

Miss Prentice
