We’re going on a shape hunt…

In nursery we have been learning all about shapes. We have enjoyed making shapes with playdough, pinboards and bands. We created shape pictures using paper shapes and on the computer with help from our buddies in P6. We used 3D objects to build castles, robots and bridges.

We also went on a shape hunt. We looked high and low to find different shapes around the nursery, school and playground. We found shapes everywhere e.g. circular signs, squares in the fence, and a cone on top of the pencil bin. We even spotted shapes in our snack!

Halloween Happiness

P1 and P2 are very grateful to the PTA and their helpers for coming in on Friday morning to run a spooktacular Halloween party. The children had lots of fun and were delighted to take home their bag filled with goodies! After a game or two of musical bumps and a chance to get creative in the messy play room, no Halloween party would have been complete without a dance along to the Time Warp!

P6M visit Edinburgh Zoo

This term P6M kicked things off with a trip to Edinburgh Zoo to study the ‘Cycle of Life’.  We were keen to make sure we saw lots of animals and learned lots of new and interesting facts.  As we were early we got to watch the meerkats and penguins and were amused by their behaviour. The zoologists from the Education Centre took us on a tour of the zoo stopping to explain the characteristics and mating habits of some of the animals.  We were all keeping an eye out for the animals that we had researched and given our talks about.

One of the animals we learned about was the Buff Cheeked Gibbon.  They have a very special mating song that they sing in the morning and at night. We learned about how they are born, grow, start puberty then become adult and how the cycle starts all over again.

Back at the Education Centre we talked more about how animals change and watched a short video about how animals develop in the womb and how they are born.

After lunch we visited the pandas  but it was a chilly and windy day, so they didn’t want to come outside to say hello and stayed in the enclosure. We were lucky to see the penguin parade before returning to school.

This term we will be learning about how humans mature, grow and reproduce. Many thanks to Edinburgh Zoo for having us, and helping us start this new journey of learning.

P4F October update

Welcome back to the new term. We have posted the new 4-week home learning grid on the website. We hope you are enjoying the new format and activities….the children certainly are!       This home learning is due to be completed by Friday 17 November.

We are looking forward to our orchestra trip on Monday 27 November. Thank you so much to everyone who offered their services as parent helpers…..we have been inundated with people! Sadly we only have 2 adult tickets per class so we are only able to take 2 parent helpers on this occasion.

Our topic for this term is Time. We will be learning how to tell the time (half past, quarter past/to, etc) plus learning about 24 hours clocks. We will also be focusing on planning and organising events and working out duration.

Both P4 classes have responsibility for planning and organising our Christmas service on 19th December so the children will be very busy this term using their new skills of time management to help select songs, plan content and work out timings for the event.

Our resilience work continues this term. We will be starting a new unit of work called Keep Connected and we will be posting further information about this after our launch assembly next week.

Please let me know if you have any questions or queries 🙂

Jack and the Beanstalk

Primary 3 have been very busy during the first term, from designing catapults in groups to help Calvin fly to exploring emotions and making our strategies wheels. But the biggest and most exciting project we had this term was preparing for and delivering our Harvest Show.

We had a wonderful time learning about, and taking on, different roles to put on a performance. All of us became artists by creating the backdrop and making props and we helped with the marketing of the show by designing the posters and invitations. We also got to choose whether we would like to have the role of a dancer, actor, narrator or musician within the show and had special responsibilities for each. We understand that there are lots of jobs involved in productions and only through working together we were able to put on a spectacular show for you.

Of course a huge thank you to Mrs Denvir for her wonderful artistic skills and dance moves along with Mrs Hussain and the Primary 7s for their kind hospitality! A big thank you as well to parents and carers who helped with costumes and practice at home!

Thank you to everyone who came along and supported us, we hope you loved the show as much as we loved doing it!

October 2017

The children have been working hard on their plants topic and, as well as creating some fantastic art work, have been growing plants. They seem to have had much more success than myself!! We would like to sell these plants at our Christmas Fair so I am looking for some pots to plant them into. These can be clear yoghurt pots, plastic plant pots (clean), or any other suitable container which they can decorate. Please send anything you have to school over the next few weeks. We can then share these out among the class and have something special to raise funds for school. The children will be bringing their plants home with them for the October holiday to allow them to water and care for them over this time. Please try to support your child, if necessary, by reminding them to water their plant.

Thank you in advance for your help and support.

Languages Assembly

At our recent assembly we celebrated the wide range of languages represented at Roseburn. Each class shared some of their learning from French and German, singing songs, playing games and setting challenges.

We learned that many of our pupils speak a different language at home and we enjoyed finding out how to say ‘Hello’ in over 20 languages!

Mr Cairney taught us some Mandarin and challenged us to work out what different characters might mean.

Amanda, our German assistant from last session had returned to Edinburgh for the weekend and was delighted to be able to join us for the assembly and visit p6M to catch up on their news.
